What is Motor Oil Viscosity?

If you've ever wondered what the letters and numbers on a bottle of motor oil mean, you're not alone. The ratings have very important implications for your engine. Understanding what these mean can help you to be a better informed car owner.

It may look like random letter and number combinations, but the label on your motor oil tells you important things about how the oil will behave in certain temperatures. Viscosity is a measurement of rate of flow. If your label reads "10w-30," the 10 indicates how slowly the oil flows when it is cold and the 30 indicates how quickly it will flow when it is warm. In the winter, look for a low viscosity oil, and in the summer, choose a high viscosity oil.

Visit us at McConnell Honda in Montgomery for all of your engine needs. We'll change your oil and get you safely back on the road again as soon as possible.
